The Poongzhi and Dalithang-Gangyab-Khagochen chiwogs of Karna Gewog in Dagana will no longer face any water supply shortages in the village. This is because the 7th De-suung National Service Water Project was completed and handed over to the chiwogs yesterday.

The water supply project in Dagana is expected to benefit over 100 households of the two chiwogs.

The three-month-long project was executed by 80 De-suups with engineers and experts from the works and human settlement ministry and personnel from the Royal Bhutan Army at a cost of around Nu 6 M.

The project has sourced water from Lunachhu, which is located around 11 kilometres from Poongzhi chiwog.

“Earlier, we had to store water for days in drums and huge containers for cooking and drinking purposes. However, the water wasn’t enough for the toilets. Now with the new drinking water supply, we are expecting a reliable water supply. We are grateful to His Majesty The King for giving us the new drinking water supply,” said Eden, a resident.

“The previous water source wasn’t very clean. But the current water source is bigger and also very clean. We chose the water source in consultation with the Dzongkhag Administration. The drinking water supply will benefit the two chiwogs for decades,” added Dorji, another resident.

“Earlier, we couldn’t get water from the taps instantly as we had to wait for turns because the water supply was very small. But now the situation is different and all thanks to His Majesty’s Project,” added Kinley Tshering, another resident.

“The new drinking water supply will benefit us immensely. Earlier, we had to forgo with shower at times because the water wasn’t enough to even for cooking and drinking,” said Pem, another resident.

The Karna Gup said with the new water supply, the gewog administration has trained few residents for the sustainable management of water projects and to ensure uninterrupted water supply.

“Before inauguration today, we checked all households who are connected with the new water supply. During our inspection, we found out all water taps have continuous water flow indicating drinking water woes have been solved now. We are grateful to the His Majesty The King, De-suups, and individuals involved in the project,” said Lhawang Dorji, the Karna Gup.

The chiwogs faced drinking water shortage after the previous water source started drying up and due to the increasing settlements over the years.
