While presenting the annual State of the Nation report, the Prime Minister Jigmi Y. Thinley said 2011 has been an eventful year.

Lyonchhoen said the historic celebration of Royal Wedding gave immense joy to all Bhutanese. He added that the image of Bhutan as a unique and sovereign nation was further enhanced by the International Media.  Lyonchhoen said the Royal visit to India and Japan contributed significantly towards strengthening the close ties between these two countries.

Another significant event among others was the UN General Assembly recognizing Bhutan’s contribution to the international community by appreciating the guiding philosophy of Gross National Happiness.

“In preparing this year’s report, I have as in previous years marveled at our amazing achievements within a short time and under many constraints,” said Lyonchhoen. “In reflecting on the reasons and causes for such accomplishments, I am reminded, once again, that the credit belongs largely to our highly dedicated and competent civil servants. Likewise, the local governments, the corporations and business sector are deserving of high Praise.”

However, Lyonchhoen said the September earthquake, the serious Rupee debt and the fire tragedy of Wangduephodarang Dzong have left all the Bhutanese with heavy heart.

“We are mindful that these pale to insignificance to the catastrophic proportions of economic, financial, social, ecological, famine and political crises faced by both rich and poor countries all across the world. Yet for us these great challenges that unites us and gives rise to our inherent resilience and the indomitable will of a Bhutanese nation.”

The Prime Minister also presented the achievements made along the line of four pillars of GNH in the past one year.

Lyonchhoen expressed gratitude to His Majesty for His Majesty’s guidance and selfless service to the nation.  He also expressed gratitude to the development partners especially government of India for their continued support and assistance. He also expressed deep appreciation to His Holiness the Jekhenpo, central monastic, truelkus and lams for the spiritual nourishment.
