The veterinary hospital in Paro is seeing a surge in feline distemper cases. In the past month, almost 150 cats have died out of 300 brought for treatment. Currently, an average of 10 cats are reported sick daily. The district saw an outbreak last year as well. The highly contagious and potentially fatal disease of cats primarily affects kittens and unvaccinated cats.
Infected cats show symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, weight loss, fever, and loss of appetite among others. Veterinary doctors advise people to vaccinate their cats.
“Due to the resurgence of feline distemper in Paro, we have suspended the sterilisation service of cats as a preventive measure. Infected cats have to be isolated from the uninfected ones. Moreover, it is important for people to vaccinate their cats for prevention. The vaccines are available at pharmacies in Thimphu,” said Dr Tenzin Wangchuk, a Veterinarian with the Paro Veterinary Hospital.
The disease does not transmit to humans.
