Umling is the first gewog in Sarpang to have a financial field office. The Bhutan Development Bank opened an office at Thongjazor near the dungkhag office in March this year. It is already benefiting some 4,000 people of Umling and Tareythang Gewogs.

Small yet effective. Manned by three staff, the bank is a blessing for the locals there.

The residents can now just walk in anytime. They no longer have to travel to Gelegphu, some 40 kilometres away for banking facilities. According to them, they can now save the expenses incurred on travel.

“The benefit of setting up this office to the public is immense because we no longer have to travel to Gelegphu for withdrawing or saving money. We could do all these here now,” said Nidup Zangmo, from Umling Gewog in Sarpang.

Nearly 70 individuals have opened a saving account with the bank there, which is living up to its focus on rural prosperity.
