Fire extinguishers hung by the walls is a common sight in almost every Dzong and Lhakhang across the country. But how many monks, caretakers or officials know how to operate them in case there is a fire mishap? For instance, the Trongsa Dzong has around six types of fire extinguishers and 16 hydrants. But none of the monks or the officials in the Dzong knows how to operate the equipment. Therefore, the Fire Division of Trongsa Police conducted a demonstration for the monks and officials of the Dzong on how to use the fire containing equipment, recently.

The demonstration is the first of its kind for the monks residing in Trongsa Dzong. The police taught them how and which kind of fire extinguisher to use during fire mishaps.

“We did not receive such training before. However, from now on we know how to use the equipment in case of a fire outbreak,” said Tshewang Jamtsho.

“We now know which type of fire extinguisher to be used during fire mishaps and which kind of fire extinguisher to use depending on the cause of the fire. The equipment is different for fire caused by an electric short circuit, a gas cylinder, butter lamps and other causes,” added Sonam Penjor, the Sungkhop of the Dzong.

“We recommend them to use carbon dioxide and BC cylinders if the fire is caused by gas or electricity. We are hopeful they now know how to use the different kinds of fire extinguishers,” said Tshering Gyeltshen from the Trongsa Police Fire Division.

Meanwhile, the fire team in Trongsa also received water pumps worth Nu 600,000 from the headquarters in Thimphu.
