Some hoteliers catering as quarantine centres in Gelegphu Thromde are grappling with water shortage for almost a week now. Owing to decreased volume of water at the source, there is an unequal distribution of water for the hotels. It has been a struggle for them to manage water from their neighbours and nearby water source.

“There is no water supply since Tuesday. The shortage could be because of monsoon rainfall disturbing the water source which people in quarantine don’t understand. So they complain. There is a big problem with water shortage,” said Chhimi Yonten, a hotelier.

“People in quarantine complain saying there isn’t enough water to use the washroom. Even the restaurants are managing water from other sources for cooking purpose. It is really difficult to maintain hygiene in the washroom without water,” added Rekha Subba, a hotelier.

Usually, thromde supplies water for the residents of the thromde area twice a day on a timely basis- from 6 AM till 9 AM and from 1:30 PM to 10 PM. According to the Thromde officials, the current water shortage is due to a decrease in the volume of the Moa river because of the dry season. Moa river is the main source of water for the residents of the core town area.
