Residents of Mokhoma and Brongshing villages in Gomdar Gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar will get reliable and adequate drinking water within the next two months. The De-suung National Service launched the new water project on Monday. The project is expected to solve the issue of inadequate drinking water supply for more than 55 households.

Currently, water in Mokhomo village is supplied from a small water source which is hardly enough for 20 households. Villagers said the water they receive is not enough.

“The previous water source was constructed in 2005 and we didn’t face any water problem till 2008. But after that, we have been facing water problems continuously. Forget about using water for vegetable cultivation, it’s not even enough for drinking,” said Lhendrup Zangpo, a farmer in the village.

“Without water, it is difficult to maintain hygiene,” said Lhamo.

“With no enough water, I left paddy cultivation and ventured into cardamom cultivation. But without water, cardamom is also dying. When the water supply was constructed for the first time we got enough water but after few years, we stopped getting adequate water,” added Penjor, another farmer.

The new water project at Mokhoma will have tanks at the source and two new water reservoirs with 7,500 liters of water capacity. The total cost for the water supply work at Mohkoma is about Nu 1.7 M.

Similarly, DeSuups will also take up the water supply work in Brongshing village. The water project worth more than Nu 2 M will benefit about 36 households in the village.
