The Gelephu Dungkhag Court yesterday, sentenced a 57-year-old man to 1 year and 1 month imprisonment for smuggling tobacco. The man was charged for petty misdemeanor. He can pay in lieu of the imprisonment.

The man, who is from Tsirang, was caught smuggling eight bundles of chewing tobacco in September last year. To avoid paying tax, the man had tried to enter from another route instead of the border gate.

Meanwhile, the court also sentenced a 34-year-old man from Lhuentse to 9 years and 4 months imprisonment last month for raping a 16-year-old girl. The crime took place in august last year.
