The Tsirang District Court sentenced two former tellers of Bhutan Development Bank Limited’s (BDBL) branch office in Tsirang for embezzling Nu 17,095,615.16 from 2012 till March 2019 to 12 years in prison. The court passed the judgement today.

According to the judgment, the two female tellers both aged 32 years have embezzled the amount by forging and tampering with the bankbooks of 67 clients.

The court also ordered the duo to repay the embezzled amount along with an interest of 15 per cent within six months from the day of the judgment.

The cashiers were arrested by police in Tsirang in 2019. The case first surfaced when a client visited the bank to withdraw money only to find the account empty.

Meanwhile, the Bhutan Development Bank Limited had made restitution in the same year to all the clients who lost their savings to the convicts.
