The Prime Minister, Dr Lotay Tshering arrived in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, this morning. The Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina received Lyonchhen at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Lyonchhen was received with a 19-Gun salute and presented with a Guard of Honour. The Prime Minister is in Dhaka to celebrate the Birth Centenary of Bangladesh’s Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Shiekh Mujibur Rahman and Golden Jubliee of the country’s independence.

Later, while visiting the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, Lyonchhen laid a wreath and planted a tree sapling. The National Martyr’s Memorial is an iconic structure in Dhaka, which was constructed to express the country’s gratitude towards people who fought and sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War in 1971.

Lyonchhen also visited Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and laid a wreath. The Memorial Museum was the personal residence of Shiekh Mujibur Rahman and it is said that the house was the centre of Bangabandhu’s political activities. However, it was in this resident, Bangabandhu and most of his family members were killed.  The house was turned into a museum in 1994.

And tomorrow, Lyonchhen will be attending a celebration at the National Parade Ground and will be making a statement there as the guest of honour. The year-long celebration which started earlier last week already saw the head of states of the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka visit Bangladesh. The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi is scheduled to be in Dhaka for the main celebration on 26th March.

This will be Lyonchhen’s second state visit to the Republic of Bangladesh after assuming office in 2018.
