After the border gates were closed and restriction on the entry of labourers from the neighbouring states of India was imposed, Bhutanese youth have been taking up jobs at the Mini Dry Port (MDP) in Gelegphu. Around 18 youth have been working at the MDP for more than 10 months and making around Nu 50,000 to 60,000 a month.

They have been isolating themselves from society and family.

Jigme Tenzin, a youth group leader said replacing foreign workers help curb the out flow of Bhutanese currency which would help improve the country’s economy.

“In future, all youth should come together and take up such works and it is possible. There is no much difference in work done by foreign people and our people. We are ready to take such work in future.” said Jigme Tenzin

He further added, “Our Youth should not waste their time indulging in bad habits and roaming in towns. Taking up such odd jobs is also contributing to nation building. If one takes advantage and take up such work, we can not only make some amount but would be helpful to our government.”

Initially, around 30 unemployed youth were also recruited at the MDP. However, some of them left the job.
