The days of rough and tiring rides to the Buli Menmo Lake in Zhemgang are coming to an end. The final stretch of the road leading to the sacred site will be blacktopped soon. According to the Nangkor Gewog Administration, the work has already been awarded to a contractor.

Today, the four-kilometre road towards the lake from Buli Central School is in a poor condition. It is narrow and bumpy. Driving through the road is a test of patience especially for those travelling in small cars.

“For cars with better ground clearance, the road’s condition is not a big problem. But for those driving small cars, it is difficult. Due to the big potholes, vehicles often breakdown in the middle of the road, and the visitors are stranded. Moreover, it is difficult to find good accommodation facilities here,” said Sonam, a visitor to the sacred lake from Buli under Nangkor Gewog in Zhemgang.

“People have been asking when the road would be blacktopped or levelled. I submitted its proposal to the gewog and district administrations many times. And finally, after almost four years, it is approved. This is good news,” said Pema Singay, the Caretaker of the Buli Menmo Lake.

The government approved Nu 14 M to blacktop the stretch.

“The government approved the fund for the benefit of those visiting the Buli Lake. The blacktopping works will begin soon. At the moment, the contractor is gathering the required materials at the site,” said Dorji Wangchuk, the Nangkhor Gup.

The gewog administration is also constructing parking, restrooms, and other basic amenities for visitors at the sacred lake.

The Buli Menmo Lake is believed to have formed from the jewel basket of Buli Menmo or mermaid ages ago. It receives visitors from across the country while the nearby villagers often attribute the community’s success and prosperity to the lake’s blessings.
