With the onset of the mandarin season, farmers are requesting the government to buy the mandarin like cardamom from various points. Farmers say if the Food Corporation of Bhutan could facilitate, it would also address the problem of middlemen. To this, during the Meet the Press session today, Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering said the Agriculture Ministry was asked to study on the amount of production, production areas and workers involved in harvesting and packaging the mandarins.

“How many labourers are needed to pack the boxes of mandarin? If there is none from villages, we will deploy a group of youth. While exporting, it is not easy these days. Lhamoidzingkha produces lots of mandarins but the border is closed. We are discussing the temporary opening of the border to export it,” said Lyonchhen.
