Following the inclusion of potato in the export list some two weeks ago, exporters in Phuentshogling have now started with the export of the cash crop. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in India announced the import of potato from Bhutan without a license until January next year.

The export of potato from Phuentshogling came to an abrupt halt on October 11, as it was not listed in the export item. Only cardamom and asparagus are included in the export list.  Upon the government’s request, within a week time, five agriculture products of potato, areca nut, apple, mandarin and ginger got the new market access to India.

For the first time, a new plant quarantine centre was also opened in the neighbouring town of Jaigaon. Despite all these developments, potatoes couldn’t be exported from Phuentshogling as it contradicted with the import policy of India. However, after the government’s request, an import relaxation for potato was given till the end of January next year.

Few vehicles ferrying potatoes left the country this evening.
