The death toll from coronavirus crossed the 100,000-mark in India where over 6.4 million infections were recorded. However, as per experts, given the size of its population, India has seen a relatively low death rate.

According to India’s Health and Family Welfare Ministry, West Bengal has over 260,000 COVID-19 positive cases with around 5,000 deaths. And as per West Bengal’s COVID-19 health bulletin, Alipurduar district, which includes the neighbouring town of Jaigaon has more than 4,000 cases with 55 deaths as of yesterday. Similarly, Jalpaiguri has some 6,000 cases with 59 deaths.

Assam reported over 1,400 new cases taking the total tally of positive cases to more than 183,000.  And with new 10 deaths, the death toll rose to 721.

And across the world, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has exceeded 34.4 million worldwide this week, according to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University. The deaths have increased to over one million globally while more than 25 million people have recovered from the virus.

The United States still remains the most affected with more than 7.3 million cases and over 208,000 deaths.

The virus, which has led to the death of more than a million people in just nine months, also has badly affected the economy of countries worldwide.
