Thromde restores water supply to lower Taba, Yangchenphu and Changjiji after few days of disruption

Water supply in lower Taba, Yangchenphu and Changjiji areas of Thimphu Thromde was restored yesterday. Continuous rainfall for the past few days had disrupted the supply to these areas.

The incessant rainfall led to the sinking of the soil which then burst open the pipeline from a joint. The damage was reported between the water source at Doderna and the treatment plant in Taba.

The Thimphu Thrompon, Kinlay Dorjee says it took some time to restore the supply because the area where the pipe burst could not be accessed by car. “As a result, people had to transport the materials on their backs. We had to do the works manually because deploying machines was not possible,” he said.

Residents of the affected areas remained without water for a few days.

“Usually, water shortage is not an issue here. But this time, the supply was cut-off for a few days following the heavy rainfall. I drive and fetch water from other people’s houses although it is awkward,” said Migma, a resident of Changjiji in Thimphu.

While this time, the water supply is restored, with monsoon just setting in, it is likely more of such cases will arise. The Thimphu Thromde looks to address this by supplying water to residents from its two tankers. The office will, however, charge a minimal fee to cover fuel expenses for the service.
