The Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan Limited (RICBL) is providing free life insurance cover of Nu.100,000 to frontline workers for a period of six months starting from March this year.

The free life insurance scheme for frontline workers covers Desuups, Police and Army personnel, health workers, National Land Commission officials and other volunteers serving in the frontline.

The Chief Executive Officer of RICBL, Karma, said that the scheme was initiated as a gesture of appreciation for the frontline workers and that it would be extended if the situation continues.

The CEO said that the insurance covers frontline workers who lose their life while carrying out their duties. However, the CEO clarified it does not cover Coronavirus patients who die from the virus.

“In the unfortunate event, if a frontline worker loses his or her life while on duty or they get infected and die from the virus, they will be covered by the insurance,” he added.

Frontline workers who are on duty along the border areas said that the insurance scheme has motivated them further.

Desuup Chencho Dhendup in Phuentshogling said that he serves for around 16 hours and then rests for about eight hours leaving behind his family. “On behalf of all the frontline workers, I would like to thank RICBL for the life insurance scheme,” he said.

Another Desuup Kuenzang Choki in Phuentshogling said, “With the free life insurance, we are more proud and strong while being on duty in the border areas leaving behind our families.”

A Desuup in Samtse, Yeshi Dendup, said that the insurance has motivated them. “If anything happens, our family need not suffer,” he said.
