The 33-kilometre Nanong Gewog Center (GC) road in Pema Gatshel now remains risky for travellers along some stretches. It was badly damaged by heavy rain last summer. People are asking local authorities to fix the road which benefits more than 350 households in Nanong and Zobel Gewogs.
Locals say the road has become dangerous. The rain has badly damaged the blacktopped Nanong GC road which was constructed in 2011.
“It was difficult to transport construction materials to Yelchen central school in Nanong Gewog. Heavy vehicles have been avoiding the road and using farm roads,” said Sonam Jamtsho, the Nanong Gup.
“It is very risky for motorists at this stretch since some are inexperienced. It would be impossible to avoid accidents. We would be grateful if a retaining wall could be constructed to prevent accidents,” shared Ugyen Dorji, from Pangthang under Nanong Gewog.
“The area is very risky. We have to be extra careful. We don’t know whether the road would be maintained or not,” added Cheda, also from Nanong.
However, according to the Dzongkhag Engineering sector, they have a limited budget.
“We could not do anything immediately as there was no budget during the handing-taking. Even though we have received over Nu 3 M, we have to prioritise the work. There are 11 gewogs in Pema Gatshel, and Chongshing and Nanong Gewogs suffered major damages,” said Sonam Jamtsho, the Dzongkhag Engineer of Pema Gatshel.
People are now saying the road needs to be realigned since it is unstable and sinking. But the Dzongkhag has never received any proposal. However, the road would be maintained in a month or two.
