To finalise the draft agenda for national consultation on violence against children, a workshop was organized by the National Commission for Women and Children in the capital, yesterday. Students from schools in the capital, out of school youths, members of various youth groups and representatives from Dratshangs and Rabdeys attended the workshop.
“The set of recommendations from this workshop will be presented to Regional Consultation and will be used in mapping assessment,” said Deki Dema, Assistant Programme Officer.
The recommendations will also be presented during a regional consultation meeting which will be held at Colombo in Sri Lanka on May 24. Bhutan will be represented by two students.
“This workshop is really helpful. Since the agenda is domestic violence against children, children are participating this workshop so we can share our opinions and views and discuss the issue in a major way in a very openly manner,” said Ashish Katwal, a student, Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School.
“What I want to share out there is mainly about the protection a child require, all the basic rights and responsibilities a child have and also focus on causes and its solution about the violence against children,” said Lily Yangchen, a student of Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School.
Although no solid data or statistics are available, it is believed that domestic violence against children does prevail in the country. Through this workshop the National Commission for Women and Children hopes to assess the issue and tackle it by talking personally with the children.
