The World Bank is doing independent research on the national minimum daily wage rate. The government has already done a study on it. Once both the findings are on the table, the government will implement it. The Prime Minister said this in response to the Member of Parliament of Kengkhar Weringla on the increase in national minimum wage rate as pledged by the government.

The government has pledged to increase the national minimum daily wage rate to Nu 450 from Nu 125. Rinzin Jamtsho, the member of parliament of Kengkhar Weringla asked the Prime Minister on when the government will increase the minimum wage rate as pledged. He said with the ongoing development in the country, the economy of the country will also change with inflation.

To this, the Prime Minister said that the government is in the process of revising the long due national minimum wage rate which has to be backed by studies.

“We have discussed with the Labour Ministry and Minister himself and decided on the minimum wage rate, that is Nu 450. However, we felt that there should be proper research. The wage rate may increase from what we have decided or even decrease. Only after proper research, we will decide the minimum wage rate. Thinking that there might be an error from our side, we have given the opportunity to the World Bank for the proper research and calculations. After that, we will announce it,” said Dr Lotay Tshering, the Prime Minister.

He added, the government will revise the minimum wage rate soon but a particular date has not been fixed. He said that people in rural communities need not worry about the wage rate.
