The Samdrup Jongkhar’s football ground remained unused for more than a year. Last year there was not a single match and football enthusiasts lamented the lack of initiative and fund to organise any tournament. However, this year the residents, specially the youth, are overjoyed with the resurrection of ST Cable rolling trophy. The tournament began yesterday.

A total of 9 teams including two from Nganglam Dungkhag are participating in the tournament. The organisers said mobilizing funds for conducting football tournament has always been difficult. This, they said, is because not many sponsors come forward to sponsor the tournament.

This time the SD Eastern Bhutan Ferro Silicon has provided fund for the tournament and will be used for prizes and running overhead costs.

The rolling trophy, started two years ago had to forgo last year due to lack of funds though there are interested individuals. The organisers said they are worried if there would be sponsors for the next season. If not once again the ground will be left overgrown with wild bushes. The final of this season’s tournament will be played on May 19.

Open football tournament in Bumthang

Meanwhile, an open football tournament gets underway in Bumthang. Two matches were played today. About 15 teams from Bumthang and Trongsa are taking part in the tournament. The tournament is organised by youth of Chamkahr town, to engage unemployed youth in healthy activities and also to promote football in Bumthang.
