Nyilo or Winter Solstice is celebrated as the New Year, especially by the people of Wang-Tsho-Chhen-Gey. While the festivities involve families getting together and enjoying meals on the day, an old tradition is children visiting homes on the eve of Nyilo singing the Lolay song.
In Thimphu, over 270 youths in their bid to revive this age-old tradition, have formed groups and visited homes in the Thromde area yesterday, singing the traditional verse of good wishes- the Lolay.
Nyilo, according to the Bhutanese calendar based on Buddhist astrology, is the first day of winter and the shortest after which the days start getting longer until the Summer Solstice.
