A man in his early twenties is under Paro police custody for allegedly smuggling 3.5 kilograms of gold. Officials from the Regional Revenue and Customs Office apprehended the suspect, who was returning from Bangkok, with 10 gold biscuits at the Paro Airport yesterday evening.
According to the Customs officials, they detected the gold hidden inside a 55-inch television (TV) set. They said the suspect has cleverly coated the gold with silvery substances and were tucked inside sound boxes.
However, the suspect claims to be unaware of the gold inside the TV and he said an Indian man asked him to reach the TV to another Indian in Phuentshogling. He claimed, he was given 5,000 baht for carrying the TV. The officials conducted a risk profiling and the alleged smuggler was one of the suspects.
This is the third interception within this month.
