Water treatment plant at Taba inaugurated

Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering inaugurated Central Water Supply Scheme, Waste Water Treatment Plant and other developmental projects worth USD 25 M in North Thimphu yesterday.

The developmental projects were carried out in the last eight years with support from the World Bank.

The water treatment plant at upper Taba is a part of the central water scheme. The scheme diverts the stream located two kilometres above Dordena to the Thromde’s water supply network.

The Thimphu Thromde Kinlay Dorjee said, “Water shortage in Thimphu is one big issue. It is due to drying up of water source at Motithang.  Around 50 per cent of the water gets dried at the source only. This happens during dry seasons. So the water from Dordena will complement the water that we have been receiving from Motithang.”

The water has been supplied to about 100,000 people in Taba, Jungshina, Pamtsho, Hejo, Samtelling, Langjophakha, Yangchenphu, and Changiji areas since April this year.

“Earlier we had a severe water shortage in our colony. We used to receive water only once in two days. This year, after we started to receive water from Dodena and it has solved our water shortage issue,” Phurpa Wangdi, the Chairman of Changjiji Colony, said.

The prime minister also inaugurated the Waste Water Treatment Plant at lower Taba. Since its operation a few months ago, sewerage lines have been connected to the plant. The purification process is carried out through biological degradation. It purifies the water and released into the river.

Other developmental activities include urban infrastructure development works for Local Area Plan in Dechencholing, Taba and Langjophakha.
