With increasing cases of domestic violence and sexual gender-based violence in the country, the Respect, Educate, Nurture and Empower Women (RENEW), a civil society organisation is faced with sustainability challenges.  So to raise fund for the organisation, RENEW today launched its second mega fair in Thimphu.

According to RENEW, over 3,000 cases have been reported in over a decade and it is estimated for the organisation to cost over Nu 7,000 per person. Last year alone, over 370 cases had been reported and  Nu 2.7 M was invested for the survivors of domestic violence and sexual and gender-based violence in the country. This year till date 470 cases were reported.

The Executive Director of RENEW, Tshering Dolkar said financial sustainability of the organisation is at stake without such an alternative source of funds.

“The objective of the fair is to raise funds to provide free of cost services to the survivors of domestic violence and also to empower them to become productive citizens and be able to contribute towards the economic development of our country.”

With the fair themed “Empower women to end violence against women and children”, the funds generated from the fair will be utilised to provide continuous services especially to the survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Apart from this, the fair is expected to serve as a platform to showcase the products created by women and provide a demonstration of life skills that can be adopted by RENEW for its benefit.

RENEW was founded in 2004 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the empowerment of women and children in the country with special attention to the survivors of domestic violence and sexual and gender-based violence.
