Bhutanese replaces foreign labourers at DCCL

Dungsam Cement Corporation in Pema Gatshel is the largest cement manufacturing plant in the country. It was inaugurated in 2014. In the initial period, the plant was operated by foreign labourers. But it is a different scenario today. The plant is fully operated by young vigorous Bhutanese employees.

The huge machines were run under the command of foreign labourers to produce cement and clinker in Dungsam Cement Corporation. But now, young Bhutanese hands are busy at every aspect of the production since 2017.

“They have learned during the time of starting and they have also shown their interest in it. From my observation, all of them knows well to operate the plant and at the same time, they are serving well. The employees can also do the maintenance of what they are doing at present too,” said Sonam Jigme, the Managing Director for Dungsam Cement Corporation.

But the management thinks enhancing their skills is very important. The management is enhancing their skills by sending their employees to overseas training and inviting experts to the company.

“Most of the employees we have today are young and we don’t have enough numbers of an experienced worker. Though they are able to do what is in front of them they are not able to make a projection of other defaults if it occurs in future. These are the only challenges we are facing. But we are making them learn and we are sending for training to overcome this glitch,” he added.

The managing director added since the plant is only five years old, specializing the employees in their respective fields is very important for the smooth functioning of the plant. Today there are over 450 Bhutanese employees in Dungsam Cement Corporation in Nganglam.
