The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is charging a 17-year-old boy for an alleged attempt to statutory rape in the Wangdue Phodrang District Court.

The OAG forwarded the case to the district court last month and hearings are underway.

According to the OAG, the accused 17-year-old boy from Dagana attempted to rape a 5-year-old girl while the girl was playing outside her house. The report says the accused and the girl’s father were working together at the Wangdue Dzong construction site and went to the girl’s house for lunch at the time of the incident.

After lunch, when the girl’s father went outside to take a bath and while the mother was engaged with some household chores, the suspect followed the little girl who went outside to play. The suspect attempted to rape the girl after taking her to the backyard. The investigation report, however, says the accused abandoned the crime after the girl cried on the spot.

Report further states the mother found her daughter in a suspicious position later and noticed some signs of forceful acts against her daughter. She then took her daughter to the hospital where she came to know about the forced sexual act committed against her daughter and reported to the police.

The incident took place in September this year in the Wangdue Phodrang Dzong construction labour camp.
