Bhutan has topped the best tourist destinations in the newly released travel guide book Best in Travel 2020 by the large travel guide book publisher, Lonely Planet.

Bhutan has been chosen as the number one country to visit in 2020 out of 195 countries. The Lonely Planet has ranked Bhutan as the best country to visit based on its rich culture and tradition with its pristine sustainable environment while embracing global development.

“We are very proud and grateful to our Monarchs and our leaders for bringing Bhutan where we are today. As well as our stakeholders and the visitors for believing in Bhutan and making sure that Bhutan is number one. We are thankful to every one of them,” said Damcho Rinzin, the Media Spokesperson for Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB).

The recommendation was made by the visitors across the world and the online editors from the Lonely Planet group.

“They have writers and contributors from across the world so they zoom it down into many countries and finally to have Bhutan featured as the top country by these well-experienced experts is an honour for us. So, this is how they come about in nominating and recognizing as top countries to travel next year,” he added.

The Director-General of the TCB said, beginning 2019 this year, TCB embarked on an ambitious vision or motto of “Taking Tourism to the Top” which also meant to make Kingdom of Bhutan the number one destination in the world. He said this recognition by the lonely planet in a way fulfils this though a bit too soon. He, however, said that this should further encourage or motivate us to continue to work hard to take Bhutan tourism to further height.

Meanwhile, in 2018 a total of 274,097 visitors arrived in Bhutan with a growth rate of 7.61 per cent over 2017. Of the total arrivals, there were 71,807 international tourists and 202,290 regional tourists.
