Going beyond and pushing the boundaries of the traditional painting, a graduate from the National Institute of Zorig Chusum in Thimphu is displaying his artworks in an exhibition themed ‘Ribong’ in the capital from yesterday.

Some 59 artworks are displayed at the VAST gallery. His artworks are all basically traditional paintings but with a touch of contemporary expression.

Gyembo Wangchuk after studying traditional painting discovered the endless possibilities of art after spending his time in VAST Bhutan and his own studio Artdhi Bhutan.

“I have learned traditional art but not contemporary. Now I am trying to blend in both the style together.”

Today his artworks are worth a minimum of Nu 9,100 to more than Nu 800,000.

“The main reason for this exhibition is because I have never seen a solo exhibition done by an artist with a traditional art background. And contemporary is new in Bhutan. That’s why I think it is important for people like us who know about art to lead by example. So I have been working hard for the last three years for this,” Gyempo Wangchuk added.

The exhibition will be open until the end of this month.
