The reports on the increase in dengue infected cases in Phuentshogling hospital has alerted the Sarpang Dzongkhag. The dzongkhag, in close coordination with Vector-borne Disease Control Program (VDCP), Gelegphu Central Regional Referral Hospital and Gelegphu Thromde organized a Mass Health Education on Dengue Fever Prevention for the resident of the six Demkhongs under Gelegphu Thromde by engaging students of Gelegphu High School and Kunedrup High school in the programme today.

The Gelegphu Thromde funded the programme.

Around 300 students from the two schools participated in the Mass Health Education Dengue Fever prevention programme. The main objective was mainly to educate the students on Dengue fever and its prevention and show them practically visiting house to house especially at a high-risk area where one can observe mosquito breeding places.  Students can implement and share their knowledge with their friends and family members on dengue prevention when they get back home.

“Recent days dengue infected cases in Gelegphu has gone up. The main objective of our gathering here today, All of us will visit individual household and advocate awareness on Dengue fever, how to take care of water, how water is stored in toilet and advice them to cover stored water with a lid and to maintain their surroundings clean,” said Tobgye, the Programme Analyser in VCDP, Gelegphu.

Participants were provided observational survey sheet to list the availability of Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) and the cleanliness of surroundings. They were made to advise the public to make use of mosquito nets and to avoid storing water in a dirty container for a longer duration. It is also mainly to see if the households are using some of the control measure distributed by the VDCP office in Gelegphu.

“We are continuously keeping on implementing the malaria control measure. For example use of mosquito nets. When we visit individual households, we inspect whether they make use of mosquito nets and list them,” he added.

The number of dengue cases in Sarpang Dzongkhag has reached 200 till date. Of the 200 cases, 20 were identified has indigenous cases, since they have no travel history to outside country and other dzongkhags. 15 are indigenous cases in Gelegphu Central Regional Referral Hospital and 5 indigenous cases are in Sarpang hospital. The remaining 180 are imported cases as per their travel history.
