To mark the World Ozone Day, the National Environment Commission Secretariat is organising World Ozone Day throughout the Nation in collaboration with 20 Dzongkhags to take forward sensitization on the impact of Ozone Layer Depletion at the regional level.

In the capital, the day was observed at Bjemina Primary School. The students of Bjemina primary school under Mewang Gewog celebrated the world ozone day under the theme “32 years and healing.”  It’s been 32 years that the world has come together to restore and protect the Ozone layer. Thus to ensure healthy living on earth, Bhutan continues to create awareness to its people on the importance of the ozone layer.

“The school has committed not to use vehicles on the 2nd day of every month and also made a commitment that they will not use the electricity for two hours on that day so I think it will be replicated in other schools too,” said Dorji Tshering, the Thimphu Dzongda.

Many events are celebrated in the cities and town but this time the National Environment Commission decided to celebrate world ozone day away from the capital to educate all the school children and the local government officials.

“Students have varieties of the programme starting from the quiz competition which focuses on protecting ozone layer especially like how ozone is depleted which is due to a substance like CFC(chlorofluorocarbon),” added Sonam Gyalpo, the programme coordinator for World Ozone Day celebrations.

Through this programme, the students are encouraged to use ozone friendly appliances and be an ozone ambassador to protect the ozone layer. Bhutan further plans to continue this program in every dzongkhags to advocate on the importance of ozone layer depletion.
