The Basic Health Unit (BHU)-Grade I at Langthil Gewog in Trongsa will begin providing medical services by next month. However, it will be fully operational by January next year.

The construction of the BHU, which began in 2014, was supposed to complete by 2017. Officials say due to the contractor’s failure, the works could not be completed on time, following that the contractor was terminated. The works were then awarded to a new contractor.

Today, the construction of the main building and a doctor quarter along with the four-units of staff quarter are completed. Two blocks for staff quarters are still incomplete.

Although the gewog already has a BHU- Grade II at Tongtongphey, the new BHU-Grade I was constructed to cater to the increasing population in the area since the construction of 720 MW Mangdechhu project began in 2012.

The people said they have been waiting for the new BHU to open so that they can avail themselves better health facilities. The gewog has more than 400  households.

“In the BHU-Grade I, there will be a Doctor, and facilities like ultrasound, endoscopy.  So not only people of Langthil Gewog but also Korphu Gewog will be benefited,” Kesang Choden, a resident of  Langthil, said.

“Travelling in a vehicle and walking long distances for health services is a problem for us. It will be good to have one nearby,” Rinzin, also from Langthil, said.

The Mangdechhu Project funded the construction. The district health official said, all the diagnostic facilities would not be available till next year. They have put up the staff requisition as per the staffing pattern of BHU-I to the health ministry.
