Some shopkeepers of Tshangchuthang in Samdrupchhoeling Dungkhag in Samdrup Jongkhar have already begun constructing buildings in the new township. The new town is located about a kilometre away from the present town.

They began constructing houses after His Majesty granted 5.5 decimals land to 31 shopkeepers of Tshangchuthang last year. The shopkeepers have been living on the government land for more than three decades.

After receiving lagthram or landowner certificate, four of the shopkeepers have already begun their building construction.

“I am proud and happy to construct a house on the land gifted by His Majesty,” Tshewang Tenzin said.

“We could not afford to buy land, so we are very thankful to His Majesty. Earlier, we were doing small business on government land.  But now we are working hard to construct our own homes,” Mindup Dorji said.

Other plot owners are also planning to construct houses soon. They are allowed to construct two and three-storey buildings in the new town.

The new township has  21-acre of land with 63 plots. The new town was identified since the present town lies in a flood risk zone.

Samdrupchhoeling Dungkhag Administration has already completed the construction of a 250 cubic meter water tank, an internal road and electrification work for the new township.

The township will benefit almost 7,000 people in the dungkhag. Samdrupchhoeling is about 68 kilometres from Samdrup Jongkhar.
