To facilitate and enable students pursuing engineering to interact and get insights from practising professionals in the construction sector, the second biennial construction seminar was held in Thimphu, yesterday.

The two-day seminar was also to connect academia, researchers and the construction industry stakeholders such as engineers, architects and contractors through a common platform and exchange ideas and innovations.

Experts and professionals in the field of construction presented and shared their experiences on construction management, occupational health and safety and environmental Impact Assessment. Such a platform is also expected to create a suitable environment for the youth to choose a blue-collar job and to dispel the perception that it is inferior and unattractive.

“One of the primary objectives of this seminar is to bring onboard field practitioners, academia, researchers and students together so that they can network, discuss and also, more importantly, look at technologies and innovations that are there. With infrastructure development taking at a very rapid pace in the country,I think it’s important for us to also see that we keep abreast with technologies and innovation,” Phuntsho Gyeltshen, the CEO of  Construction Development Corporation Limited (CDCL), said.

He also added that the CDCL has set up a planning and design division at the head office to enhance and improve the sector. Apart from that the CDCL has also tied up and signed various MoUs with some of the international companies. The CDCL in future also hopes to conduct projects outside the country to set benchmarks and raise the standards of the construction industry. CDCL has been into construction since 2009.
