Grass broom farmers in need of road

Mongar Tsakusha Detshen, a group of grass broom farmers in Goishing_Ridzommo chiwog under Dechhenling Gewog, Pema Gatshel is still waiting for the restoration of their farm road.

The group has been doing well for a few years in the past. But their business was stopped abruptly when the farm road connecting to the main road was washed away at several locations a few years back,

“We worked for almost three years after the forming of the group. It was running well. We even had a profit of Nu 17,000-18,000 during that time. We divided the profit within the members later. Thereafter, it’s not that we don’t want to do this work but we have to stop for a while as our farm road got blocked and we could not carry the product to the nearest road point,” said Dorji Chedup, from Mongar, Goishing_Ridzommo chiwog, Dechhenling Gewog.

“If the road gets cleared, the group has a high hope to collect again. We are looking forward to strengthening the group’s capacity. These days the kusha grass has increased in the village and there are more buyers in the market. We are thinking to do our best hereafter,” added Samten Norbu, from the same chiwog.

The government has supported the group by constructing a one-storied shed to store the broom for the group. It’s lying idle for now.

“We want to start the works as before, we can’t think of dissolving our group. Our government spent more than Nu 300,000 to construct the shed here. It will be a huge loss to the government as well and will not benefit anyone if we don’t put it to use. We are very sure to carry on with our business if the farm road is restored,” Dorji Chedup added.

Members started planting the kusha grass along the border of their land to increase the production, and with no business at present the grass is abundant. The group was formed in 2014. There are eight members at present.
