Trongsa will have a multi-sports complex within the 12th Five Year Plan. The dzongkhag administration is currently in the process of developing its design. The complex will house indoor courts for volleyball, badminton, basketball and table tennis. It will also have a football ground outside.

The dzongkhag plans to construct the complex a few hundred meters above the Thrue-Pang Palace. The area’s geotechnical study, carried out a couple of times, showed positive results. Officials said the gentle slope will levelled with minimum damage to the forest cover in the area.

“Within this 2019-20 financial year, we should be able to come up with the proper mapping of the area. Also, the drawings and other estimates must be ready so that by the year 2020-21, we should be able to start. And within three years, at least the basics must be in place,” Trongsa Dzongda Tenzin Dorji said.

About Nu 10 M  been allocated for the new infrastructure.

“Although the financial budget and everything is ready, we are yet to come up with proper drawings right now. So once we have the proper drawings, we will be developing it phase-wise,” Dzongda added.

The residents say, besides promoting sports in the district, the facility will boost the local economy. They expect the multi-sports complex to attract sports enthusiasts from the nearby districts.

“Apart from benefiting the locals, such facilities will create a platform for youths to take interest in sports. Today, without the facility, which is further worsened by the lack of support from parents, those youths who are good in sports lose their interest. They do not want to pursue careers in sports,” Tashi Dhendup, a resident, said.

“Due to the lack of sports facilities here, the students and officer goers who are transferred here and are good at sports, do not have a platform to showcase their skills. At present, we use Sherubling School’s ground and at times, travel about 20 kilometres to Tagktse to play games,” Chokey Wangchuk, another resident, said.

Once complete, Trongsa’s maiden sports complex will have added facilities of a car parking, washrooms and changing rooms. It will also be used as a Tendrel Thang for various events and celebrations in the dzongkhag.
