With a limited number of beds at the Serzhong Lower Secondary School in Monggar, the boys’ hostel is left overcrowded. In the heat of summer, the boys are having a hard time adjusting in the crowded rooms.

The problem arose when the new hostel developed several cracks on the beam of the ground floor. And the boys had to be moved to the old hostel for safety reasons a few months ago.

The 32-bedded boys’ hostel at Serzhong Lower Secondary School in Monggar was completed six years ago. Today, it is used as a temporary storeroom for the school. The gewog had managed to construct few pillars for the hostel after cracks developed but their work went in vain. Now, after moving to the old hostel, the boys are having a hard time putting up in crowded rooms. And it is no different for the girls.

“It’s difficult for us to maintain cleanliness when we have to share the same bed since many students are younger. Small boys also play around making the room dirty. So when there are many students in the room, it’s also difficult for us to focus on our studies,” Karma Wangdue, a student at Serzhong LSS, Monggar, said.

“Since our school is located in a hot place, it is inconvenient for us to share the same bed. We also don’t feel like studying, when we have to study on the same bed,” added Kinley Wangchuk, also a student in the same school.

Shermuhoong Gup Ugyen also raised the concern during the recent Dzongkhag Tshogdue. However, the gewog did not get a good response. The gup added that the former education minister and the dzongda had visited the school for inspection but nothing has been done so far.

“The gewog cannot carry out the hostel maintenance with only one hundred or two hundred thousand ngultrum. The renovation work seems small but there are chances that we might have to dismantle the whole structure. If we don’t dismantle the whole building I don’t see any possibility of maintaining only the slab. So gewog and school alone cannot carry the renovation works, as it will incur huge amount. So, for those reasons, we proposed it in the Dzongkhag Tshogdue,” the gup said.

After a long deliberation, The Dzongkhag Tshogdue decided to submit the request proposal to the education ministry for immediate intervention.
