The Social and Cultural Committee of the National Assembly submitted eight recommendations to the education ministry yesterday. The recommendations were submitted while presenting the report on National key Result Area on Education towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal in the 12th Five Year Plan.

The Committee was given a task to report on Sustainable Development Goal 4-Quality of Education. The committee found that challenges continue to remain in providing access to remote areas, inclusive education and on the overall quality of education.

The committee recommended reviewing the pre-primary age limit. It also recommended maintaining the class size as per education policy guidelines.

The committee highlighted the need to align the National key Result Area (NKRA) of the TVET course under the labour ministry. This is because as of now, NKRA of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) course is included under the education ministry whereas the programme is kept under the labour ministry.

The committee proposed to review the shift from examination-based system to holistic assessment as a pilot project in a few schools before implementing in all schools. And giving Early Child Care and Development (ECCD) centre a priority, the committee proposed to establish ECCD centres even for ten children aged 3-5 years. As of today, at least 15 children are needed for ECCD centres to function.

Also, the committee emphasised on having an Education Bill since education is the key sector of the nation. The committee stressed on reviewing the recruitment policy of teachers as both experienced and inexperienced teachers are being recruited during the recruitment of new teachers. And the last recommendation the committee presented was on the need to review the policy of central schools for its sustainability.
