Roofs of more than 14 houses were blown-off by strong winds and heavy rains in Monggar yesterday. The incident took place at Monggar Gewog at around 5: 30 pm.

According to our reporter, Sonam Choden, the affected people near the Monggar town were rebuilding their homes this morning using tarpaulin sheets.

Lhamo is one of the victims.  She said she was preparing for a ritual when the incident took place. “Till now we haven’t seen such a wind storm. There were small incidents which would just shake the temporary kitchen. This is the first time that the roof of my main house is affected. I was scared,” she remembers.

So far no casualties have been reported.  According to the Monggar Gup, the Gewog office immediately rendered help to those affected families.

“After the incident, we have been distributing tarpaulins to the people. For the worst affected we provided three tarpaulins and two for the lesser damages. This morning also we have been getting reports for the damages from other villages and we are helping out by distributing tarpaulins,” said Gup Dechen Yeshey.

There are also reports of damages caused by the windstorm in areas are Kilakhar, Phosorong, Takchu, Yagpogang and Themnangbi in Monggar.

Dzongkhag officials are currently assessing the extent of damages caused.
