Parents want Nakeythang ECCD centre to be relocated

Following the recent flash flood, which damaged early childhood care and development centre (ECCD) at Nakeythang in Lhuentse, parents now want the centre to be relocated to another place for safety reason.

The flash flood on April 29 had damaged two rooms and other structures of the ECCD. After the incident, parents gathered to clean the debris on May 4.

“Although we are cleaning it right now, it would be risky if a flash flood occurs again in future,” Pema Dema, one of the parents, said.

“It would be convenient, if the ECCD centre is relocated to a different place,” Dechen Choden, said.

The ECCD centre’s facilitator, Chimi said, “even parents are now reluctant to send their children to the centre.”

However, the Lhuentse Dzongrab Kinley Dorji says relocating the centre to a different place will be difficult due to the rugged topography of the area.

But for now, as an interim measure,  the centre will be shifted to Lhuentse Primary School this Thursday.

“We are thinking of arranging an empty room at Lhuentse Primary School for the ECCD centre,” Dzongrab Kinley Dorji said.

Nakeythang’s ECCD centre was established in 2017. The education ministry and the dzongkhag invested Nu 1.2 M to develop the centre.

At present, there are 27 children and two facilitators at the centre.
