In the latest update on cyclone Fani, it has intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal. The cyclonic storm, which was moving north-north-eastward, has hit Odisha, an eastern Indian State this morning.

In the event of the cyclone’s landfall, Bhutan is likely to experience bad weather for the next few days.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty wind is in the forecast for places in South, East and Central parts of the country starting this afternoon.

“Starting from tonight and mainly on Saturday and Sunday, gusty wind is also likely because of the cyclone. Due to the heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides are also likely to occur,” Singay Dorji (PhD), the Chief of Weather and Climate Services Division of the National Centre for Hydrology and Meteorology(NCHM), said.

Foreign media described Fani as India’s strongest landfalling tropical cyclone in nearly five years. The Cyclonic storm is expected to bring major damages.

More than 800,000 are evacuated from Odisha where the cyclone is expected to landfall today.
