Her Majesty Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck inaugurated two new beds with all sets of equipment for Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the national referral hospital today.

Her Majesty donated the beds with equipment.

The new beds with equipment are expected to cater health services to about two hundred child patients in PICU, annually.

PICU is an area within a hospital specializing in the care of critically ill infants or child.

“Last year during the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s birthday, Her Majesty the Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck gave a donation of Nu 6 M to the JDWNRH to increase the number of beds in the PICU from five to seven beds,” Lhab Dorji, the President of JDWNRH, said.

“The benefits are enormous in increasing by two beds because until now, we have only five beds. With the increase of two beds, we would be able to provide services to more child patients.”

Her Majesty Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck also donated Nu 1 M towards promoting palliative care in the national referral hospital. It will be used particularly for cancer patients.

The hospital introduced palliative care in March 2018 with the introduction of radiation and chemotherapy services.

“We are no more referring patients to Kolkata for treatment. And we have a lot of patients who require palliative care, cancer patients. But then because the Palliative Care was not approved during the preparation of the 12th Five Year Plan, it is not featured and therefore there are no funds. The contribution from Her Majesty will play a big role in promoting Palliative Care,” Lhab Dorji said.
