Thimphu District Court sentenced a 35-year-old man to life in prison for murdering his ex-wife, a 27-year-old woman. The judgment, which was passed on March 29, also ordered the convict to pay compensation of Nu 492,875 to the deceased’s sister within ten days from the day of the judgement.

According to the judgment, the convict was found guilty of setting his ex-wife on fire using petrol, which caused her death. The incident happened in September 2017 at Centenary Children’s Park in Thimphu following an argument. The couple were separated a month before the incident.

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) says the incident occurred while convict came from Paro to reach their daughter to the deceased’s place in Thimphu.

As per the judgment, the convict initially denied the charges stating that the fire was set by the deceased herself. However, the judgment states he was proven guilty beyond reasonable doubts before the court of law, during the hearings.

The judgment also states that the four and a half-year-old girl will be taken care of by the deceased’s sister. It was decided after consulting with the convict’s parents in the court.

The convict informed the court that he would also give money to his daughter in case if he could make some money while serving his prison term.

The judgment further added that the prison term might get changed if convict failed to pay the compensation accordingly. The court gave ten working days to appeal to the higher court if not satisfied with the judgment.
