Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) is planning to establish two sports schools in the country in the 12th five-year plan. This was shared at the 4th general assembly of the committee yesterday.

The committee is currently working with the education ministry on the project.

Two tentative schools, Jakar Higher Secondary School and Damphu Central School have been identified for the project.

The sports schools are expected to help groom future sportsman and build elite athletes to represent Bhutan nationally and globally.

“What we are looking at as of now is an integrated model where students athletes will join schools in Bhutan along with other students but will have an enhanced sports programme,” Sonam Karma Tshering, the Secretary-General of BOC, said.

“They would have access to coaches, some better facilities and different curriculum if possible in the future so that they have more hours for training.”

He added that the school will have at least 100 to 150 student-athletes along with the regular students.

“Our hope is that while we train these student-athletes, it will also have a demonstration effect on the other students and other students will be given opportunities to participate if they are interested and if they have the potential.”

The committee expects to implement the project by 2020 in the two schools.
