The government is looking at doing away with some of the State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and handing it over to the private sector. A task team committee is currently reviewing the 16 existing SOEs across the country.

The committee’s review report is expected to be presented to the government after three months.

At the recent Friday meet, Finance Minister Namgay Tshering said a committee was formed after discussion with relevant agencies.

The terms of reference were also drafted for the review. Based on the report, the government will facilitate the capacities of the private sector to undertake SOEs.

“In the long run, some SOEs can be operated on a public-private partnership or PPP model, instead of completely state-owned,” Finance Minister Namgay Tshering said.

Since there are no rules of procedures for the functioning of the corporate board and management at the moment, the finance minister shared that the corporate governance manual was framed to streamline the functions of the SOEs.
