The Bhutanese national women’s basketball team claimed another international win by defeating Afghanistan 66-38 in a friendly match played yesterday. This is their first international win in the home ground.

The match was played at the swimming pool indoor basketball court in Thimphu.

The first quarter of the game saw the host nation taking advantage of the home crowd. The Bhutanese team looked confident with quick attacks and good finishes. The first quarter ended with only a two basket difference.

However, the Bhutanese team sealed the game early with a much more improved performance in the second quarter. The Afghani side failed to match the good display put forward by the Bhutanese girls ending the friendly match in favour of the dragon girls.

The match was organised by the Basketball Federation of Bhutan (BFB) with the aim to promote the agenda of peace and harmony through sports. It was also to encourage more participants of women in the sport.

“Over the years, women’s participation in basketball has increased drastically. In today’s group, we have girls from the age of 15 to 33. We had a diverse group of women participating,” Jigme Namgyel, the President of BFB, said

Apart from the exchange of cultures and various experiences, the program is also expected to strengthen friendship between the two nations. The federation now plans to organise such programs annually.
