According to statistics from the Judiciary, matrimonial case always tops the list of civil cases. Last year alone, there were over 3,000 cases excluding the application for marriage certificates. And divorce cases seem to be rampant with many children forced to live with a single parent.

Rinzin Dema, 25, is a single mother with two sons. Our reporter, Tandin Phuntsho, says that she refuses to come on camera. Today, She is working at RENEW, a Non-Government Organisation, which helps the victims and survivors of domestic violence.

She has been with the RENEW for three years now after her divorce. She is paid Nu. 5000 per month by RENEW but life is not easy for a single parent like her.

“It is much better if both husband and wife live together. But when you become single and with your kids living with you, it’s difficult. You have to look after your kids; you have to do everything to make ends meet. I work whenever I am free but it is not enough,” she says.

The figures from the Judiciary shows, the matrimonial cases have always been the highest. In 2010, there were over 7000 matrimonial cases. Though the number reduced in 2011, some cases go unreported.

BBS also learned that most of the people who come to treat drug or alcohol problem in the hospital do have some problem in their family. And divorce is one of the causes.
