Addressing the nation from Samtse on the 111th Notional Day, His Majesty The King said this year has been a momentous election year with the successful conduct of elections to both the National Council and the National Assembly.

His Majesty attributed the success to the guidance provided by the election commission and the support of the civil service, media, armed forces, and volunteers, and underpinned by the unwavering support and active participation of the people in exercising their franchise.

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty said four political parties contested in the National Assembly elections with 188 candidates in the Primary Round.

“Irrespective of whether they won or lost the elections, their participation has been a commendable service to the nation for which I extend my admiration and appreciation,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty extended Tashi Delek to the new Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering, the Opposition Leader Dr Pema Gyamtsho and other Members of Parliament.

His Majesty said in the run up to the recent parliamentary elections, he listened to the campaign pledges and made sure not to miss a single debate on television.

“I was heartened to note that all political parties were firm and committed, and the candidates were astute and competent.”

His Majesty said the political parties identified various ways to safeguard the future of Bhutan and achieve national goals.

“Notwithstanding the different approaches, all the political parties pledged to work for the wellbeing of our people through their resolutions.”

His Majesty said, in essence, he was deeply heartened to note that all the political parties were committed to strengthening the country’s sovereignty, peace and unity, achieving equitable socio-economic development and ensuring the long-term welfare of the people and country, in line with the national objective of building a Just and Harmonious Society guided by the noble principles of GNH.

“The vision of their pledges clearly reflected our aspirations as a nation, and I commend all the parties and candidates who participated in the elections,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty said the system of democracy in Bhutan is founded on the noble vision of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo who has worked selflessly and tirelessly throughout his reign to bring such extraordinary circumstances to Bhutan today.

“Therefore, I consider all of us- the King, the government, civil service, elected representatives, and the people of Bhutan- extremely fortunate to be granted this singular opportunity to serve our country.”
