Monggar Dzongkhag Education sector will conduct an impact study of the common examination system in primary schools of the dzongkhag next year. This was decided at the annual dzongkhag education conference held in the Kengkhar lower secondary school.

The dzongkhag level common examinations for classes two, four and five in Monggar was started in 2016 in line with Bhutan Council for School Examination and Assessment (BCSEA) regulation to standardize the question papers and enhance the academic performance of students.

However, no impact study has been carried out.

“To continue with current examination trend, an impact study needs to be conducted,” Tobzang, the Principal of Ridaza primary school, said.

“ I have seen the dzongkhag struggle with budget constraint to conduct the common examinations. However, no study was conducted to see the implications of the common exams,” Sangay Dorji, the principal of Khengkhar lower secondary school, said.

At the conference, some participants pointed out the need for a uniform paper evaluation to standardize the academic performance of students appearing for the dzongkhag level common examination.

“Questions are same but with the evaluation done in one’s own school, there will be a difference in markings. I think there is a need for a common evaluation of the papers. For instance, if all the teachers teaching pre-primary sit together and evaluate the papers,” Neten Lhamo, the Principal of Gyalposhing Central School, said

The resolutions from the conference will be submitted to the education ministry for review and then it will be forwarded to the national education conference for final approval and endorsement.

The education officials and principals from 33 schools in the dzongkhag attended the two-day conference.
