Nine drug-related convictions in about two months’ time

Thimphu District Court

The Thimphu District Court and Phuentshogling Dungkhag Court have convicted nine people, including a female, in drug related cases since September end.

They been sentenced to prison terms ranging from one year to eight years.

The Thimphu District Court on 14th of this month sentenced a 24-year-old man from Gozhi Gewog in Dagana to one year in prison for selling solvent and inhalants like dendrite and thinner to two boys in August this year.

The man was sentenced as per the Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Substance Abuse Act of Bhutan 2015.

Section 146 of the act states that a defendant shall be guilty of the offence of illegal sale of inhalants or solvents if the defendant sells, imports or exports any inhalants or solvents under Schedule VI of the act without license or authorization.

The court also sentenced five men on 24th October to prison terms ranging from two-and-a-half year to eight years for illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Meanwhile, the Phuentshogling Dungkhag Court sentenced three men to jail terms ranging from two-and-a-half-year to five years for criminal attempt of trafficking narcotic drugs and substances.

The judgments, passed in September and on the 12th of this month, state they were arrested from the border gates on different occasions.

An official from the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) says the office is receiving more number of drug related cases for prosecution from police and others.

Several drug related cases are under trail in courts across the country.
